Selecting the Right Dog for Your Family

A dog is a fantastic addition to any home. They bring a lot of joy and are especially good for children.
Over the past few years, studies have shown that children that grow up with dogs benefit in many ways from doing so. It didn't surprised me to learn that they are often healthier than children who do not have pets. Kids with dogs are more active and play outside more and consequently they also develop stronger immune systems.
Studies also show that pet-owning children grow up to be more empathetic. Typically, they are more willing and able, to take responsibility for others.  If you want to read more about why dogs are so beneficial for children, you can do so here.

How to choose a family dog
However, to be able to experience the benefits outlined above you need to find the right type of dog. Not all breeds make good family pets.

How good are they with children?
Most dogs like being around children. However, some breeds are more highly strung than others are which means they find it harder to cope with the ups and downs of family life. A good breeder like Douglas Hall Kennels will always take the time to point you in the right direction to make sure that you take home the right breed of dog.

Your family dynamic
Another important consideration is your lifestyle. If you spend a lot of time outdoors enjoying activities like hiking, a working dog is a great idea. They will be able to keep up with you and spend more time with you as a family.Whereas for a family that spends more time at home a smaller toy breed is normally a better option. Most of these little dogs only need a short walk and the chance to curl up with their owners on the sofa to be able to stay happy and healthy.

How much outdoor space you have
Another important consideration is how much space your dog will need to be able to live comfortably and stay healthy. Working breeds like to be outside, so for them, a family with a nice big garden is a better fit than one that lives in a flat. You also need to think about how your home is decorated. If you live in a property that is carpeted throughout, you do not want to own a dog that moults a lot.

How much spare time you have
If your life is hectic, the last thing you need is to spend a couple of hours every week grooming your dog or hoovering up pet hairs. For a family like that, a short-haired terrier would be a much better option than an Afghan hound.

Your family budget
Another important consideration is how much it would cost to keep your dog. If you are already living on a tight budget choosing a small breed would be a lot better than buying a Doberman that could cost as much to feed as a person.

As you can see, there is a lot to consider when it comes to choosing a family pet. However, it really is worth taking the time to do a bit of research and choose your family pet wisely.
